The Commencement Continues
January 13, 2008
Scripture:
Revelation 22: 16 (NKJV) - 16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.
2 Samuel 5: 1 – 5 -“1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed we are your bone and your flesh. 2 Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the LORD said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.’” 3 Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.”.
Synopsis:
God’s choosing and pre-ordination is a sovereign act of His will. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the life of David, the king of Israel. God bypassed seven of David’s brothers, who by man’s standards were better qualified. But before time had it’s commencement, God chose Jesus to come from the line of king David, so David’s destiny had no choice but to line up with God’s plan. As a result Jesus was both the originator or “root” of David’s genealogical line and as prophesied, became one of his descendents, “…not by the will of man, but by the will of God.”
Although David’s destiny was “prefixed,” it didn’t exempt him from the process of becoming what he was ordained to be. Along the way he ran headlong into adversity and trouble in his life. He had to endure rejection by King Saul, who was mad with jealousy and tried repeatedly to kill him. He suffered through years of being a fugitive; on the run from King Saul because he was God’s chosen. But as 2 Samuel 8 states, God “prefixed” David’s victory wherever he went. All this happened before his predestined reign commenced. Then after David’s kingdom was secured and he fell prey to private sin and public disgrace, God then activated “prefixed” mercy.
What’s true for King David is true for all who choose to believe in God and the finished work of his Son. Jesus Christ is the “root” of all our destinies, determined and designed in the mind of God and then given a commencement with our arrival in time. So like King David all of our lives are “pre-fixed.” We have a pre-fixed ordination and call, pre-fixed victory over adversity in all its forms, and when we fall into sin, as we certainly will, we have prefixed mercy waiting for us before we even fall. This is what the apostle Paul was declaring in 2 Corinthians 2: 14 when he said, “…Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ.”
