August 31, 2008
Scripture:
Job 37:9 - “From the chamber of the south comes the whirlwind and cold from the scattering winds of the north.”
Job 38:1-3 - “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.”
Synopsis:
The hurricane season is in full swing and as always the gulf states are bracing themselves for the onslaught of multiple whirlwinds. At the time of this writing, hurricane Gustov has already struck the Louisiana coast with high winds and torrential rains, soon to be followed by hurricane Hannah. Many times natural events like these hurricanes are a sign in the natural of what is to come in the supernatural. In scripture the term “whirlwind” represents God’s divine power and initiative. Prophetic insight can be gained from such natural events if we as believers are sensitive enough to God’s spirit to listen and take heed.
Whirlwinds or hurricanes create a sense of urgency and they call for people to prepare for radical change. Hurricanes represent trouble and adversity which God often uses to scatter and dispossess those who oppose His plan, and to gather and reposition His people. Hurricane Gustov is a prophetic sign of the adversity that has happened and is yet to come on the body of Christ designed to gather and reposition the church. Gustov means “staff of the Goths,” and the Goths were a barbaric, nomadic war faring nation of destructive and depraved people who revealed in rape and murder. Spiritually they represent a generation that is destructive and wasteful, with no respect for authority of any kind, but especially that of spiritual fathers. In both our society and churches, there is a Gothic spirit that mocks the idea of spiritual fathers. People inside and outside of the church are rebelling against authority, refusing to submit or show honor, and they point out the fault and failures of spiritual leaders as their excuse. But God’s principle of submission and honor toward authority is immutable, and those that violate it will bring judgment on themselves.
Interestingly, hurricane Hannah will follow Gustov and Hannah means grace. So as usual God is prepared to pour out His grace and mercy after He has scattered and dispossessed, offering to gather and reposition those who will heed His voice. It’s time that we paid attention.
